Update: Well, we didn't think that Sony would actually pull the ad β but it did, just a couple of hours after the publishing of this article.
Maybe we'll get a reshoot?
Original Story: Everyone knows that when placed horizontally, the PlayStation 5's disc drive (if it has one!) should be on the bottom, right?
... Right?
Well, whoever directed this new Sony ad didn't seem to get the memo. The wholesome video shows a father putting his son to bed, before going to off to enjoy some peace and quiet with God of War on his PS5. Except if you pay close attention, you can see that the PS5 is positioned upside down, with the disc drive on top. Foolish!
What makes this funnier is the fact that not too long after the PS5's launch, PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst actually made the same mistake, posting a picture of his PS5 sitting upside down. Said image was quickly removed once hordes of know-it-alls pointed the error out on social media, but we doubt Sony will be taking this ad down any time soon.
Anyway, let's all point and laugh in the comments section below.

Surely this is an intentional nod to the previous blunder.
Maybe itβs a glimpse of hope that SONY are developing some long lost banter
System cooling works best upside down in theory
@RenanKJ Done (good choice)
It's one way to get people talking about your advert.
Clearly just shot in Australia!
Serious question: Does the PS5 sit OK upside down in the little black circle stand or w/o it? If it just sort of rolls back and forth you'd think they would have figured it out.
Honestly, it really does look better that way. Maybe I'll wait for the remodel.
@rjejr I was thinking the same thing...
@The_New_Butler I think it has the best look of a console I've ever seen. More unique than the generic black box we had last gen.
I only just recently got my PS5 an I absolutely had to stop and think really hard about which side to put the disc in! It's super unnatural to put the top of the disc facing the guts of the console. I'm slowly getting used to it but I'm still doing a double take any time I put in a discπ .
Thats because the disc drive is upside down when its placed on the bottom. The label of a disc is always on top when you insert it in every other device just not on the ps5.
@Korgon agreed!! Itβs such a weird disc placement and facing!
I genuinely don't understand how people end up doing this but I suppose it's an easy mistake to make.
...and they've taken it down.
It looks more convenient this way... maybe they can sell it as the Australian version?
Wow an advertisement for a piece of tech you cannot buy anywhere!
The biggest blunder was designing it so the disk would go at the bottomβ¦. The drive should had been at the top, just as seen in the ad! Itβs the most intuitive and accessible placement!
Not a great thing to put in your advert as it will probably end up with a flood of calls from people putting their discs in upside down... or downside up... one of the two.
A lot of people are complaining about the ps5 design but I say itβs the BEST EVER. Presently iβm serving on a ship and I have my Ps5 with me. The Ps5 when set horizontally has such a good low centre of gravity, itβs like a Porsche. Vesselβs been rolling like 20 degrees from side to side β¦ PS5 didnβt even move a inch.
@The_New_Butler gotta agree with ya there. I liked it at first but even with black plates I've liked it less and less each time I look at it lol. Looks decent enough vertically but hideous horizontally imo. Redesigned our entire game room just to ensure I could have our 2 vertical. Really hoping the redesign is just a matte black rectangle!
@The_New_Butler Maybe it's the disc version(If you have that one). Comparing the digital version to the disc version makes the disc one look like it was an afterthought.
@The_New_Butler I got the Dbrand black plates and itβs much better but the overall shape canβt be fixed, yuk.
Any console that needs a stand to lay horizontally is badly designed imo.
My first one was the disc one, couldn't stand how it looked so sold it (not scalped) and bought the all digital version which is vastly better looking I think!
It seems weird to me that people make that mistake when the console is horizontal because its well documented which way it should be.
As tower though, I can understand its not straightforward which way a disc should be inserted.
From the original PS5 reveal, I've been saying how unintutitive the disc drive position is.
@The_New_Butler Yeah I wish Sony would get with the times where custom plates and controllers are concerned. I just spent Β£120 on a custom DualSense for my Nephew (Bday) and although it cost way more than Iβd like to pay, it does look pretty awesome. If Sony could do them in the Β£80-100 price range, theyβd make a fortune. I think MS already have custom controllers for the Xbox. Come on Sony, get your act together π
And it's been said that sony has pulled the ad
I remember my PS1 would only work upside down towards the end. There was a known problem with the laser going out of alignment and I read somewhere on the internet about flipping it... and to my utter amazement it actually worked! ...and it still worked like this the last time I tried it in 2020!
@The_New_Butler I actually really like the look of the PS5, when standing up though both the PS5 and the Series X look truly awful on their side. You would think the XSX would be fine as it's just a plain black cuboid but there's something about the proportions that just look ungainly when recumbent. Elegant minimalist monolith when upright tho'
@The_New_Butler Our 2 fit quite well standing up in the entertainment center with a couple inches to spare, obviously had to not install the shelves that are supposed to be there but works out nicely.
@themightyant haha I remember we had to do that too with our PS1 later in its cycle!
False advertising. Everyone knows you hide the PS5 behind the TV like I have it π
Maybe update the article to say that the video was taken down shortly after this article was posted?
I still like the design very much. The size of the console doesnβt bother me because there is enough space beside my tv. The black and white colour mix fits perfectly to my loudspeakers.
I got a skin from Xtreme Skins for the middle part of the console in matte black because I donβt like shiny black plastic which scratches so easily. Looks so good now.
They only put the disk drive on the bottom so they can release one with the disc drive on the top later down the line and people will consider it an upgrade!
Upside down PS5 = SSd.
@Bingbongboyo PS5: Correct Position Edition π
@Korgon Are you talking about inserting the disc when the PS5 is down horizontal or up vertical? B/c if you have to put the disc in upside down when the PS5 is horizontal the way it's supposed to be, not in this ad, then the PS5 is actually built upside down, b/c no disc should go in upside down. Ever. In any console. I would never remember to do that.
@ShogunRok Good call on the update. π
@rjejr
I have mine set up in the vertical position. It's not a huge issue though I just have to retrain my mind a bit thats all. I will say though if I didn't know better and looked at the instruction manual, I probably would have set it up upside-down if I was going for horizontal!
@SilkySmile89 Your serious? Your Ps5 is on a Ship?
I keep both my PS5s vertical. Just seems like thatβs how it should be placed.
@Korgon Thanks. I'm pretty sure I've never had any of my consoles vertical. That's about 8 now, not counting Atari 7800.
Really glad to hear it isn't upside down horizontal though, I'm old, I'd be breaking my discs in half left and right after inserting them all upside down. π I'd never even think about putting it vertical.
@Jester1701one you're putting the disc in upside down then. When the drive is on the bottom, the label of the disc is up on ps5.
Perfectly symbolizes the on-going predicament of the PS5 right now . It deserves to be upside down; it's not like it exists to most people anyway and the world anyway.
@rjejr
Yeah I have had most of my consoles horizontal throughout the years but vertical was the only way to go this time around without the PS5 covering a solid portion of the bottom my TV screen.
Plus I can't lie the popped collar look of it sitting vertical has grown on me. π
@Korgon the collar is why I feel like it looks more natural standing vertically.
@Korgon Yep, totally agree. It's a really weird feeling.
@Residentsteven Serious?! I guess vapour cooling needs to be upright. Did it work again once you turned it round?
@Korgon I keep all of my consoles in a low ceiling basement man cave - you can see the scuff marks from my Wii Sports tennis serves - I'm not sure PS5 will fit vertically. π
@The_New_Butler Agreed. However I understand why it's not removable, they have zero faith some would ever put the stand back on the XSX when they stand it upright again, leading to overheating and lawsuits. (you know it would happen.. sadly)
@Dobbos yep!! 4 months contract β¦ need something to pass the time ) I was around Tampa when Elsa hit Florida, when I finished my watch, i found all my room upside down because of the bad weather. PS5 still standing in place
@get2sammyb because even monkeys know, that any dics drive should be placed on top. I hope that PS5 Pro will get redesign of this mistakely positioned disc drive.
Ok, ok, but what was the purpose of the ad? To sell a 3 year old game? To show PS5 can play your old games? There certainly must be some new or coming soon games they should be showcasing, right?
Actually it's a right way to position your PS5 to the south from the Equator (0 degree latitude).
Otherwise the disc will spin wrong direction.
@SilkySmile89 Truly amazing. ππ
@Residentsteven oh good! I was genuinely feeling bad for you! π€£
@Nepp67 ugh. Itβs awful. I love the look of every other PlayStation, even the PS3 Slim. The PS5 is just fugly.
Yes, respect for GRAVITY RUSH !
Vertical, horizontal or upside-down, the PS5 is no looker. Actually, looks like it's crept out of the Upside Down and certainly is a Stranger Thing.
Waiting for the less punch drunk revision thanks. And in black.
@rjejr Had my fat PS2 vertical (now that was a monolith - apart from the blue bit around the stand base) and my PS3 Slim 25xx series is also vertical.
Never dared put the Pro vertical (keep all vents open) plus it would stand up the wrong way round if I did.
By this, I mean that my main console of choice has always been on the right hand side of my TV unit
The PS3, with its disc drive on the right, stood and faced outwards. Very nice!
The PS4, with its disc drive on the left, would be showing off its undercarriage! Not so pretty...
What no one else seems to have pointed out is that it's funny to see how both Microsoft and Sony have found ways to spin the lack of games into their advertising. Still, higher FPS, faster loading times (especially with Quick Resume) and Auto HDR genuinely do make older games run better, in a similar way to how emulators upscale to make the games look better on modern 4K flat panels.
Oh, and the Series X is more than capable of running God of War. I was using it for exactly this the other day, so it's not strictly a PlayStation exclusive any more! π
Who the hell cares where he has the console positioned. Y'all are a bunch of judgmental beanbags.
I see a lot mentioning the disc drive is causing confusion about which way up a disc should go. To me, the disc has always been faced label side up on a horizontal console, or to the left on a vertical one. I see no confusion.
@Nepp67 nope it's a fugly beast and it would look stupid to own as everything is black I have plus due to the size of it know where to put it.
@tartanross K?
@SilkySmile89
How would it ever have a lower center of gravity than a flat, square box that requires no weird stand? If the PS5 is a Porsche, then the PS4 is a go kart. Same can be said about performance comparisons though π
I can honestly say I had issues with the PS4 Pro on board because of itβs small XO feet. Found it a couple of times on the edge of the table.
I got mine both vertical for the first time, partially hidden behind the TV, only the drives are visible.
Not a big deal but people seem to think the higher ups need to know how to correctly set their console under the TV.
Herman Hulst did it too:
https://www.resetera.com/threads/hermen-hulst-head-of-playstation-studios-plays-his-playstation-5-upside-down.343600/
Probably uses digital only ...
I don't know why they are even advertising, you can't buy one.
